MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (English)

LEVEL: Bachelor's Degree, TYYÇ: Level 6, EQF-LLL: Level 6, QF-EHEA: First Cycle

Engineering is a domain where science, technology and manufacturing intersect. Mechanical Engineering is the discipline where the interaction of the three is most evident. Our department was established to educate and train mechanical engineers able to adapt to modern work environment, in close cooperation with the industry and other institutes. Our goal is to contribute to education of qualified engineers who can help to transform natural resources efficiently into end products that can compete in the world markets. Our most important asset in realizing this goal is our faculty who mainly focus their R&D effort on product-oriented targets utilizing modern engineering tools.

Our curriculum consists of courses where basic engineering sciences are taught and the following systems are analyzed and designed:

  • Strength, motion and vibration of solid systems (e.g., metalic structural elements, gears),
  • Thermal systems (e.g., heating, ventilating air conditioning systems, systems that involve combustion),
  • Fluid systems (e.g., pumps, heart assist devices, air-flow systems),
  • Control of mechanical systems (e.g., control of a robot arm),
  • Manufacturing systems,
  • Engineering materials.

We support and help to organize social and technical activities for our students in cooperation with the departmental student body. We regularly invite speakers from industry to deliver speaches to our students whereby they can network and find out about what awaits them after graduation.

Among the fields where mechanical engineers can be employed are machine design and manufacturing, automation, energy production and utilization, heating, ventilating and air-conditioning, land, sea, atmospheric and space vehicle technology, defense industry, petro-chemical industry, textile industry, steel industry, glass and ceramics industry, food industry, robotics and education. With the advent of new technologies, new opportunities has arisen for mechanical engineers in the fields of nanotechnology, micro eloctromechanical systems (MEMS), micro manufacturing and biomimetics. Responsibilities that mechanical engineers take in all of these fields include research, design and product development, manufacturing, quality control, maintenance, project management and marketing.

Aim

  • It develops capacity for developing high value-added products in small and medium-sized industrial establishments.
  • Conducts research at master's and doctoral levels or at higher levels in research and development centers and universities all over the world.
  • Must be able to adapt to the changing needs of different sectors and the business world and manage company transformation processes as a manager.
  • Conducts national and international scientific research and graduate studies
  • Works according to professional ethics and expresses himself/herself very well orally and verbally.
Objective

  • Train mechanical engineers who have an entrepreneurial spirit and capable of participating in interdisciplinary research projects.

Specific Admission Requirements

For Turkish Students;

  • High school diploma
  • Placement through a nation-wide examination organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM)
  • No registration at another university
  • The university placement is carried out only by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) through a nation-wide examination.

For International Degree-Seekers
The explanation about applications and application deadlines are announced on the website of YTU. Applications can be made by post or by personally to the Student Affairs Office at an indicated date. Applicant can opt for maximum 3 departments and fill a preference form while making the application.

Placement is based on national and international exams and minimum scores from these exams. Exams of having the status of high school graduation exam (Abitur, International Baccalaureate, GCE, Tawjihi, etc.) are permanently valid. However, university entrance exams (SAT, TCS, etc) have limited validity of two years.

All the applications are evaluated by YTU International Students Commission.

For Exchange Students
Student must be a full-time student at their home university. An Interinstitutional Agreement/Protocol must exist between student’s home university and Yeditepe University. The home university must officially nominate student as an exchange student, and send their application documents to YTU External Relations Office. The applications are evaluated in coordination by the department of application and External Relations Office.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students
It is only possible to recognize formal prior learning of transfer students from different universities under the coordination of the “Adaptation Commission” according to the relevant regulations set by The Council of Higher Education (YÖK). The courses taken from other universities during former education are recognized and their grades are included into the transcript of records/diploma supplement provided that the Adaptation Commission accepts their conformity to the related degree program.

Students who have studied a short-cycle program and are qualified by the Turkish Council of Higher Education to further their education at a related first-cycle program must take Language Proficiency Test. Those who have passed this test start their undergraduate education.

Exemption of Language Proficiency
Students who have taken formal, informal or non-formal language education before their acceptance at YTU under- or post-graduate programs are exempted from preparatory class provided that they take and succeed in language proficiency test organized by Department of Foreign Languages.

Non-formal and In-Formal Learning
Exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related courses in the curriculum.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must successfully complete all courses of the program including two summer internships for a total of 40 business days and two compulsory design courses taken in their final year. Students must complete a minimum of 240 ECTS credits and must have a minimum GPA of 2.00.

Profile of the Programme

The objectives of Mechanical Engineering Program is to have graduates who collaborate effectively in professional organizations and processes, who improve their skills with their lifelong learning capabilities, who participate in multidisciplinary studies and take part in engineering teams with their strong communication skills, who can solve the engineering problems by their research and development skills with contemporary scientific and technological developments, who develop realistic, sustainable solutions concerning social, ethical, environmental and economical aspects of problems and who is preferred in innovative design and development. In accordance with program objectives and aim, courses are offered in main mechanical engineering areas such as thermodynamics, energy, mechanics, manufacturing and construction, automotive and machine theory and dynamics. Lectures are assisted with modern educational tools. The faculty members carry on research activities which not only supports educational program but also supports the research activities of the public and private institutions.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Graduates of the program will have job opportunities in automotive industry ( TOFAŞ, RENAULT, TOYOTA etc.), aplliances sector ( ARÇELİK, BOSCH, VESTEL etc.), heating/ventilation/air-conditioning industry ( ISISAN, DAIKIN,LG), aotomation industry ( ENTEK, BOSCH-REXROTH, SIEMENS) in research and development sections of all production firms.
