Teaching Elementary Mathematics program aims to prepare well-educated and talented teachers in line with teacher competencies determined by national and international authorities. Teacher candidates are expected to integrate various knowledge and skills while teaching and be a representative mathematics teacher for their colleagues. They are equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge about mathematics, teaching mathematics, teaching and learning theories, curriculum development, measurement and assessment, educational research, and educational and school system.
Teacher candidates are given opportunities make practice in teaching from the early years of the program by participating Mathematics Workshops which are organized at schools in the neighborhood or Support for Education program which is carried out in the campus. The candidates work with students in the form of implementation of mathematical tasks and also scaffolding students’ mathematical understanding. Thus, they have opportunity to improve their pedagogical content knowledge before they graduate. Moreover, there exists a Mathematics Room where teacher candidates make practice and use concrete and technological teaching materials that they can use in their university courses and teaching practices in schools.
As being the first time offered in Turkiye at the undergraduate level, teacher candidates are given opportunity to pursue Teaching at IBDP and Teaching at IBPYP minor programs to receive the IBDP or IBPYP Teaching Certificate when they are satisfied the stated requirements. Thus, they become eligible to make teaching practice at IB schools and work at those schools afterwards. Teacher candidates can also pursue double majors and minors in other departments and study for a semester at universities abroad through the ERASMUS exchange program.
