Profile of the Programme

The PhD Program in Physics at Yeditepe University has been offering continuous doctoral education since 2004 and is designed to train independent researchers capable of conducting advanced scientific research. The program consists of coursework, a qualifying examination, and a dissertation. During the coursework stage, students are required to complete a seminar course, five elective physics courses, and two free elective courses, and must fulfill all course requirements within a maximum of four semesters. Students who did not take a research methods course during their master’s studies are required to complete this course during their PhD program. After successfully completing the coursework, students take the qualifying examination and, upon passing, begin their dissertation research, with the entire program to be completed within a maximum of twelve semesters.

The program provides a strong theoretical foundation in the fundamental areas of physics, particularly classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and electromagnetism, while integrating analytical, experimental, and computational research approaches within a multidisciplinary framework. Students are trained to follow contemporary scientific developments, critically analyze and synthesize new ideas, and produce original, high-quality research at an international level. The program also emphasizes advanced measurement, modeling, and technology-oriented applications required by industry, as well as the broader societal contributions of physics, preparing graduates for leadership roles in both academia and high-technology sectors.
