ECTS Credit Allocation

ECTS is a student-centered credit system designed within the framework of the European Higher Education Area to facilitate the recognition of diplomas and study periods.

In summary, the ECTS credit is a number that indicates how much workload a course requires, based on the total amount of time needed to complete a full academic year on a full-time basis at any higher education institution.

With the assumption that a student works full-time throughout an academic year (34–40 weeks, 1500–1800 hours), a workload of 25–30 hours corresponds to 1 ECTS credit.

Yeditepe University is a higher education institution that offers qualifications at the doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degree levels. The standard duration of associate degree programs in vocational schools is two academic years, with a total credit requirement of 120 ECTS.

Bachelor’s programs in faculties consist of two integrated levels, including the associate level. The associate level of these programs has a standard duration of two academic years and a total of 120 ECTS; bachelor’s programs have a total duration of four academic years with 240 ECTS; non-thesis master’s programs have a duration of three academic years with 90 ECTS; thesis master’s programs have a duration of four academic years with 120 ECTS; and doctoral programs have a minimum duration of six academic years with a minimum of 180 ECTS credits. These credits are in line with the regulations of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF and QF-EHEA), the Turkish Qualifications Framework (TQF), and the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ).

At Yeditepe University, an academic year is designed to include all teaching, learning, and assessment activities: 38 weeks in the integrated programs of Medicine and Dentistry, and 34 weeks (17 weeks per semester) in all other programs.

The credits of the courses included in the curriculum are calculated based on the assumption that a student can allocate a maximum of 45 hours per week for all educational activities. The total duration allocated for educational activities per semester is 38 weeks for Medicine and Dentistry programs and 34 weeks for other programs (14 weeks of classes and 3 weeks for final exams and preparation). Accordingly, 1 ECTS credit corresponds to 28.5 hours of student workload in Medicine and Dentistry programs and 25.5 hours in all other programs.

ECTS credits determined on the basis of student workload are reviewed by the academic boards of the relevant units at the end of each semester, based on the results of the "Student Workload Survey" and "Assessment and Evaluation," and are updated when necessary.
